Music Industry to seek money for each iPod sold
November 30th 2006 06:16
The big bad ugly music industry must have just decided they couldn't care less about having friends. Or at least, it seems they are so greedy they don't mind pissing off the consumer base in the name of profits.
The latest fit of greed unfolded when Microsoft caved in and agreed to pay Universal $1.00 for every Zune sold. Ultimately I think this poor move (there seems to be a lot of poor decisions made at Microsoft as of late) will hurt all of us moving forward, because now the music industry has a firm foundation to stand on when making the argument that EVERYONE should be assumed guilty of piracy regardless of whether they are or not. Microsoft might have just opened the flood gates on these new "listener taxes" the music industry is imposing on us.
The next victim looks to be Apple. Universal Music Group Chief Executive Doug Morris told the Reuters Media Summit that "It would be a nice idea. We have a negotiation coming up not too far. I don't see why we wouldn't do that... but maybe not in the same way," when asked if the company would try to hit iPod with a fee.
This is just getting out of hand. How many times am I going to have to pay for a damn song?
