Internet Marketeers Using Britney Spears To Gain Users

December 2nd 2006 22:12
Britney Spears Ad

Britney Spears and her recent rampage of obscenity seems to be gaining ground in about every realm of the internet as of late. It all began with her sluttiness getting the better of her in a decision to give paparazzi a few snaps of her pantyless crotch. It was a move that will probably drag her down into a pit of rehab and media bashing, but one that also has internet advertisers chomping at the bits.

Britney Ad

I made this discovery while working on one of my tech blogs this morning. When I published a change in the footer an ad came up that anyone who keeps an eye on hot web stories simply couldn't resist (don't worry, I didn't click my own ad; Rather, I typed in the address displayed at the bottom of the ad).

The ad says "Help Britney lose her weight and get a free gossip toolbar". Now most of us here on Orble wouldn't dare fall for such a spammy catch phrase, but I would imagine there are hundreds of thousands of gullible teens just waiting to click away at any sign of the fledgling pop star.

You can pick off the targeted audience once you hit the landing page. My guess is there is probably some type of spyware included in this freebie toolbar, which goes to show how low people are reaching to get naive people to their sites.

Is this all getting out of hand or is it just smart marketing?

Sidenote:

PLEASE be careful when downloading any type of toolbar like this. I have no idea if the one linked to above would cause harm, but you should always use caution with this sort of file.

Just sayin'...

Yeah, never download spyware from shady companies, always make sure they're from respectable companies such as google or microsoft.
