SEO Goggles - November 2006

DMOZ

A few years ago a link in the human edited DMOZ web directory meant you had a much better shot at ranking top 3 for big keywords, but those days are long gone and the debate on DMOZ links is still going strong.

The directory, which is currently near impossible to get listed in due to a huge back load and faulty editor setup still has benefits, but those benefits can be attained anywhere else that has the same page strength.

I have 3 listings in DMOZ right now, so I get to see how it all works from the perspective of a webmaster who has sites in DMOZ. Two years ago a listing I have on a PR 6 page on a pretty good spot within the travel section of DMOZ was doing VERY well for my keywords. I was targeting "Youth Hostels" and was bouncing between spot 3 and 5 for a good 6 months. This brought on a ton of traffic with little or no effort on my part. My on page optimization at the time was terrible and I had few backlinks. Could it have been the DMOZ listing that was boosting me past others who had done a lot more work than I in the area of SEO?

My suspicion comes from a plummet in rankings on that site right about the time a big Google update come along and nailed everyone to the wall. The update supposedly removed the weight of a DMOZ listing. I believe it did.

My links in DMOZ are still good links. All 3 are on a PR 6 page or better, but the links are acting just like any other PR 6 backlink. Nothing special.

The bottom line is that if you're going to submit to DMOZ, just submit your site and forget all about it. You might end up with a strong backlink 6 months down the road, and you might not. Either way I think it's a waste of time to sit around working on ways to get listed. It just isn't worth it.

iPod

The big bad ugly music industry must have just decided they couldn't care less about having friends. Or at least, it seems they are so greedy they don't mind pissing off the consumer base in the name of profits.

The latest fit of greed unfolded when Microsoft caved in and agreed to pay Universal $1.00 for every Zune sold. Ultimately I think this poor move (there seems to be a lot of poor decisions made at Microsoft as of late) will hurt all of us moving forward, because now the music industry has a firm foundation to stand on when making the argument that EVERYONE should be assumed guilty of piracy regardless of whether they are or not. Microsoft might have just opened the flood gates on these new "listener taxes" the music industry is imposing on us.

The next victim looks to be Apple. Universal Music Group Chief Executive Doug Morris told the Reuters Media Summit that "It would be a nice idea. We have a negotiation coming up not too far. I don't see why we wouldn't do that... but maybe not in the same way," when asked if the company would try to hit iPod with a fee.

This is just getting out of hand. How many times am I going to have to pay for a damn song?

Nokia 770 Internet Tablet

Nokia 770 Internet Tablet

The Nokia 770 Internet Tablet just might be my first Nokia purchase. I've never really been into anything Nokia builds, but this new gadget has my peepers peeled.

The portable Internet Tablet is perfect for me and my schedule. I'm constantly on the go and keeping up with all of my blogs can be a challenge. This baby has an RSS reader that looks pretty slick, perfect for watching the blogosphere when on the move.

The gadget includes pre-installed Google Talk, which runs on Voice Over IP technology. The upgraded software platform also supports SIP-based VoIP solutions.

The cost really isn't that high all things considered. US $359.00 is about what I paid for my Treo 650 when it first hit the shelf, and this like a lot more fun!

Tips For Running a Better Blog

November 25th 2006 17:26
Blog Marketing

I had a long week off for Thanksgiving so I think it's time to toss some more blogging tips out there for the community to chew on. Before I get started with this post, please keep in mind that I'm no pro at this. I've just been at it for about five years so I feel I've got a little experience in the field. That being said, I welcome anyone here to comment with other tips and I'll edit the post to add them in. [ Click here to read more ]

Google Selling Newspaper Ads?

Google Newspaper Ads

Could Google go offline with its Adwords program? It's starting to look like it. The online advertising king is testing print media ads in several major US markets and so far there is no news that these test runs will slow. The next logical step would be to implement the system and start offering the ad space to the Google Adwords Clientelle

I hope Orble is ready for some fast paced tech action moving forward because SEO Goggles is loaded up and ready to rock and roll. Starting with this post, I'll make it a habit to do at least one of these per week. The weekly digest will be a handful of the weeks most active tech related posts within the Orble Tech blog circle. The idea is to start bringing more attention to the tech content here at Orble so us tech junkies can build a better readership. Hopefully this type of thing will help raise awareness for all of the tech blogs so we can collectively reap what we sow
